Five questions

01 · What do you make?
Jars for kimchi, soy sauce, soybean paste. The big ones you see behind Korean houses. Mine hold about 80 litres.
02 · Since when, and why?
My great-grandfather started the kiln. I didn't plan to — I was studying design. Then I spent one summer here and never left.
03 · What's Korean about this?
The jar breathes. The clay has tiny holes so the kimchi ferments slowly. Nobody else makes a container that is meant to leak air.
04 · What's left on your hands?
Clay under the nails, always. And my left thumb is flatter than my right — from pressing the rim.
05 · One word for someone who wants to learn
Come in summer. If you still want to do it in August, you'll do it.
